RIDDING THE WORLD OF EVIL, ONE ALIEN AT A TIME: THAT'S MIA SNOW'S MISSION.
Snow is in the forecast.
In a time and place not too far away, Mia Snow is an alien huntress for the New Chicago Police Department. Heading up her expert team of Alien Investigation and Removal agents, Mia's unmatched at battling the elusive enemy among us, and she's the perfect girl for the job. She's seen her brother die at the hands of aliens. She's earned each of her scars. And she'll die before she cries. Now, a series of killings have Mia and her partner Dallas tracking alien suspects -- but a sudden blast of violence leaves Dallas fighting for his life.
They are ice and fire.
The chance to save Dallas appears in the form of a tall, erotic stranger. An alien. A murder suspect. Kyrin en Arr, of the deadly Arcadian species, holds the power to heal the injured agent but not without a price. For Mia Snow, that price is surrendering to Kyrin's forbidden seduction...and embracing their electric attraction. She's walking a knife's edge, risking her badge and even her life. The closer she gets to Kyrin, the more Mia learns about her own heart, her human needs -- and the shocking secret that will shatter everything she's ever believed.
What did you think of the book? (Why this book?, New Author? Read more by author? Keeping? Thoughts on Hero? Heroine?)
I on the fence with this story. I really expected to be more enthralled with Mia's story after reading the short story Tempt Me Eternally in the Deep Kiss of Winter anthology. I really loved that story and quickly added all of the Alien Huntress books to my read pile and my Kindle. However, I do think most first stories of a series have a lot that has to go into the book making it hard for the first one to be great (usually). This one seems to have this problem a bit.
I didn't always want to continue reading despite my interest. Mia was entertaining but she seemed like so many other female characters who are strong but underneath have vulnerabilities they do not wish to admit too. Half the time I felt Mia was just going back and forth between different places and I started to feel as though she was something of a yo-yo.
I was also slightly disappointed that Kyrin wasn't more fleshed out. Mysterious characters are always fun but usually more so over time and books; so having Kyrin be mysterious most of the book only to end with a small explanation about him seemed lacking in some way. I do wish we'd learned small thing about him over Mia's forced stay with him. Even if there isn't a lot to learn, morsels here and there work better than just and oh... and by the way ending.
Still, Showalter introduced us to the world without completely boring the reader. And while I wasn't completely in love with this book, I do know that Showalter is a good writer and can really immerse you into a story. So while normally I would be put off by such a slow beginning, I do wish to continue reading the series and have already decided book two is much better.
My recommendation is that you try reading book two before completely giving up on the series.
