eBook Publishing Question

I don't know if anyone out there knows the answer to this but I need help. I'm working on converting my companies books into ebooks the only problem is that they have a massive amount of footnotes. Currently, I'm in Word moving every footnote to the endnotes by hand meaning all footnotes will be at the end of the ebook rather than at the bottom of the page (like a real book). I've also read that making them pop up is a good option as well but I don't know how to accomplish that.

I'm unsure how to handle this and wonder if anyone knows if there is a specific program I should be using or if there is a specific route I should be taking with these footnotes?

Please help.

I'm afraid I'm clueless. But I have a friend who might know how to do it...or know of a program that can help...I can ask her if you like?

That would be awesome. I finished the endnotes for one book but when I saved it as a PDF and then converted it to a mobi and epub they don't work as links. I do assume there is something more I have to do but I'm stumped.

ANY help would be great!

These kind of things always stump me. Okie dokie will ask her :) Might be a few days before she responds, as she's not always the quickest on email replies, but will text her to let her know I've sent the email :)

Thanks a lot. Incorporating endnotes or footnotes is an interesting concept when making a ebook and it would be nice if there were programs that could help you with all this... which I seriously think there are and I can't seem to figure out what they are.

Okay I got a reply from <lj user="merathanel" don't know if any of it will help with what you need but here you go for what it's worth :) Anyhow, it's been a while since I've used it, but have her try the free program Calibre. http://calibre-ebook.com/ I've used it in the past but I'm not sure how it will work for her needs. I have never dealt with footnotes, though, so I'm not sure how Calibre will handle it. I searched their help and it seems like it can be done, though I'm not sure if it's automatic or if someone has to change the coding of the book (which is possible and Calibre seems to let one do that). Here are a couple of help pages: http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/conversion.html http://calibre-ebook.com/help Is the source file Word? Here's a help page for that: http://amalthia.mediawood.net/tutorials/ebooks/index.html Didn't see footnotes included in the menu subjects, but maybe its there.

I love Calibre. It is part of why our book will be made into ebooks. I use it all the time for fan fictions and all the books I had in PDF when I got my Kindle. Love it.

As for the footnotes, it didn't convert them well but when I saved the Word doc to a HTML file and then converted that... voila! Ebook. I'm so happy and my boss is looking at me like I'm brilliant! Yippee!

Thanks for the links too. I don't know if I've mastered this but I'm well on my way. I think I'll be an expert after I have gotten a 100 into the books we have to convert. *sigh*

My issue was really the placement of the footnotes in the book. So many suggest the end while others suggest doing something like this after the paragraph with the footnote...

1. This is a footnote test just to show you what I mean.

Thanks for the links. I'll read up.

I've figured out somethings so I'm a step closer to making them ebooks.

As for the footnotes/endnotes, I do know about that option the only problem is I'm converting this books down from PDFs which means the footnotes are not actual footnotes but in the middle of text everywhere that have to be re-made into footenotes/endnotes.

My issue really is that I want these to becomes links in the ebook format so it takes the reader to the endnote or say a popup window. I just don't know how to do the pop up now. I have managed to make them links my first saving the document and then saving it as an html document and then converting to epub and mobi formats. So much work!

My biggest issue is that I've seen several recommendations for doing footnotes in books and some say make them all endnotes and some say just put them at the end of your paragraph like so...

1. Insert footnote for people to read after the text of that paragraph.

Does that seem like a good idea?
