‘Terra Nova’ canceled by Fox; studio shopping it to cable to keep Spielberg-produced show alive

'Fringe' and 'Alcatraz' also have gloomy forecasts at network

The ambitious dinosaur drama "Terra Nova" has gone extinct, at least on the Fox network.

Steven Spielberg's expensive sci-fi series only lasted one rocky season, drawing modest ratings that apparently weren't sufficient to offset its high costs.

20th Century Fox, which produced the series, says it will shop it to other networks to keep it alive. That's considered a longshot, though, because cable networks have lower budgets than the broadcast networks.

The premise of "Terra Nova" is that man by the 22nd century has screwed up the Earth so badly that the planet is dying and humanity's only hope is to time-travel back 85 million years and start over again.

The new civilization, called Terra Nova, was a huge compound surrounded by the other inhabitants of that earth, including dinosaurs.

The human settlers had brought modern conveniences with them, but unfortunately they also brought many of their problems, including the antagonistic relationships and instincts that helped doom their more recent civilization.

"Terra Nova" got off to a rocky start when production problems forced Fox to postpone its original premiere date, and when it did debut, many sci-fi fans said they were disappointed by early storylines.

The departure of "Terra Nova" and the likely demise of several other Fox dramas, including "The Finder" and quite possibly "Fringe" and "Alcatraz," means Fox could have openings for a number of new shows in the fall.

I never liked Terra Nova but it doesn't surprise me that it's been cancelled.

Fringe has been near the chopping block for a while and I understood this was likely going to be the last season anyway. I'm sorry to hear about Alcatraz though -- one of the best new shows I've seen in a long time. The premise anyway, I'm not thrilled about the actors, particularly Sam Neill.

It doesn't surprise me either and I enjoyed it.

Fringe is such a good show I don't want to see it go but then I'm not sure how they could keep going with all these alternate realities and such.

I'm disappointed about Alcatraz because I rather like the show but I'm not in love with the characters either... except Sam Neill. I really love him.

Funny that we would have completely opposite feelings about Hauser. I find him overbearing, controlling and feel he treats Rebecca like a child. I get that there's more to him than meets the eye and that losing the woman he loves is hurting him deeply, but I just can't find it in me to like him. Rebecca is okay I guess, but I don't really like the Doc much either.

Fringe has been really good and I've thoroughly enjoyed it. But I do feel that most TV shows, particularly ones with complex stories like Fringe, Alcatraz and say BSG, don't have more than about 4-5 seasons maximum otherwise the episodes get stale and repetitive. Once they've told their story they're done and should stop. Then you can look back on the series and think about how much you enjoyed it, and rewatch it again someday, instead of getting frustrated and ending up not liking the show by the time it finally dies.

I do agree that I think Hauser treats Rebecca like shes a child and it annoys me but then I can't say I like either Doc or Rebecca much so.... I really think the show is definitely going to be cancelled. It really hasn't been that spectacular which is sad.

That is very true though I do think that Fringe has barely told us a story and then could really squeeze some more out of it but giving up some resolutions to everything. I do want to own that series. I love Fringe and could see my self rewatching them all.

Also considered starting over with BSG. I really miss that show.

I've read speculation that Fringe would be likely to be brought back for a shortened final season. After this season, they're only about 10 episodes away from 100 episodes and that's the magic number for syndication. Some of the execs at Fox have already said it would be worth it to do those final episodes to get it to that point.

That would be great. I don't want it to end. I think it could still get syndication even if they didn't have the 100 episodes (some shows have) but it is always nice when they have that total to ensure it.

Makes me sad. I really enjoyed the show. :(

I'm so tired of Fox. They got rid of FIrefly which was a good show, and Terra Nova had such potential! They could have done so much with it. Alcatraz is pretty cool too. So lame!

I'm with you. It is annoying how often they chuck good shows. Fringe is a fox show too and a damn good one. It has been popular too. Why end it now?

I never watched Fringe, but I've always wanted to check it out... just never had the time or opportunity. It's really too bad to hear a show has ended before it's time. Fox just doesn't know how to develop and keep good television.

It is really good and really worth checking out.

It's true. Fox is run my dummies.

tbh I can´t believe they cancelled it, I can believe that Fox invest in a bunch of singing jumping kids *hint* instead of a show with dinosours and special effects in it, no offense really I like Glee, but those things always makes me wonder how come it is even possible O_o
