Angst Need Junk Food: Magic Cookie Bars
The magic isn't anything illegal either. I think it is just because they are so good they should be illegal.

prep-time: 30 minutes
cook time: 25 minutes
yields: 40 cookies

So after a fun filled afternoon of dealing with a teenager (my niece) something chocolatey seems necessary.

You'll Need
1/2 c. margarine, melted
1 1/2 c. graham cracker crumbs
1 c. coarsely chopped walnuts
1 c. (6oz) chocolate chips - we've been known to just add all 12 oz.
1 1/2 c. flaked coconut (approx)
1 15oz. can sweetened, condensed milk

Mix It Up
1. Melt margarine in 13x9x2 pan. Mix crumbs with margarine and pat down.
2. Layer crumbs with nuts, chocolate chips and coconut, in that order.
3. Pour milk over evenly.
4. Bake at 350 deg. for 25 minutes, or till lightly browned.
5. Cool and cut into squares.

I do believe this can cure a case of the snotty teenager. *wink*

Apparently much of my childhood was a farce. *lol* These are Eagle Brand cookies... but still worth sharing.

Talk about sugary chocolate overdose. Yum!

Yeah. I forgot to state that I switch the walnuts out for almonds but I'm pretty sure I would eat and English Walnut as that is what our Sees brand uses and it is far better than American Walnuts... who knew there was a difference?

These are beyond delicious. It is a favorite family recipe.

Oh good that you can switch, cause I'm not the biggest fan of almonds. LOL Never knew that! Go figure!

I bet!

You can usually switch out a lot of things.

Oh I love almonds. I prefer them to any other nut.

Hazelnuts are my favourites :)

Okay you got me there. Hazelnuts are pretty awesome. Still if I'm just going to eat the nut I love almonds.
Angelserenitysangel on January 20th, 2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
LOL For me always hazelnuts :)

Yeah, I'm trying to cut back too. But it is always a great thing to save for when you plan on taking them to a gathering and tasting rather than eating all. I like to test these things on my cousins and siblings because I get feedback and I eat 1 or 2.
Phoenixburned_phoenix on January 15th, 2012 11:48 am (UTC)
yeah, that's the best way to bake :D I love baking but then I have to find someone to eat it :D

Exactly!

Eagle Brand Magic Cookie bars...yum!!! There's another version that adds maraschino cherries which is also good.

Just never bake them in a ceramic baking dish, they take FOREVER to bake. You'd think Eagle would have tried that out before handing out the dishes to its employees...I learned the hard, time-consuming way.

Are they Eagle Brand? I don't know. This is something my Aunt's have made for ages so we just called it her recipe. And I'm glad she never added the cherries because I can totally see all of the cousins turning our noses up at them (at least when we were kids).

I'm a little confused by this Eagle thing. When was Eagle advertising them. And duly noted about the ceramic dish.

Yep, the pic is even from their site. =) http://www.eaglebrand.com/recipes/details/?RecipeId=3934
The recipe was on EB cans for years, and as far as I know may still be on some, I haven't looked in a while.

Wow. I feel a little cheated there. I've always known them at Aunt Martha's Magic Cookie Bars. So sad how your childhood is an illusion. *lol* Have to credit them above. Thanks for pointing it out.

LOL Sorry. It doesn't change how they taste though! =)
