Dreamwidth? What is the big deal?
Everyone is talking about Dreamwidth. What is the big deal? Is it different from LJ? Is it specifically for something special or is it just another blogging/journal site? I'm honestly curious because you all keep talking about it.

It's a blogging service that takes LJ's open-source code and expands on some features. Honestly I'm not leaving lj, though I can see some of its appeal.

I've also noted a few people on my LJ list mentioning it.

Dreamwidth seems to be more oriented towards creative people, made me think of LJ + Etsy.. and it's invite ish only (at least at the moment)? I guess that can add to it having a more serious (and desirable) status.

LJ was invite-only at first too, I believe. I'm guessing they'll have permanent accounts vs paid/free at one point, just like lj. Yeah, I see it as an etsy/vox/etc attempt to outshine lj. Don't think it'll last tbh *shrug* though I might have to eat my words later on!

It doesn't seem to be that special to me. Yeah it is a little different but why be there too?

Novelty, I guess. I dunno. It's like etsy and vox. People were talking about it so much and then it just kind of died out a month later.

Beats me. I hadn't heard about it before yesterday.

That is a super cool icon. I really love it. It makes them seem a little ghost like which so works with the show.

I have been wondering the same thing! Seems like everyone is talking about it these days.

I know!

I have to admit I'd not heard of this Dreamwidth until this entry of yours. There are just so many blogging services out there it's getting ridiculous. LJ is my home and pretty much where I'll be staying for the foreseeable future.

I have to say I get a little tired of the phases. Everyone starts going to another journal place only to realize all there friends are still at LJ and they just come back. Dreamwidth sounds nice and really easy to use but I have a paid account here and I love LJ so I'm sticking here.
Angelserenitysangel on May 5th, 2009 10:15 pm (UTC)
Exactly!!

*shrugs* I don't know anything about it other than that it keeps getting mentioned on my flist.

I suspect it's just a LJ alternate for snobs to be honest. "invitation only" Yeah, whatever. Someone above mentioned that LJ was invitation only in the beginning so I'm sure Dreamwidth will go exactly like LJ did - be super elite for a while then when they realize people aren't coming in droves they'll open it up to everyone and give alternatives just like LJ does. They're all businesses in the end and have to think of the bottom line. Just like TV, if they don't get the numbers, sponsors will pull out and they'll have to charge to start getting paid.

I have no intention of going anywhere. I'm happy with LJ.
Jill aka Josireesanwar on May 5th, 2009 11:56 pm (UTC)
I suspect the same too.

I'm staying put.
There's a scientific explanation for that: Dean - DW b&whugemind on May 5th, 2009 10:31 pm (UTC)
From what I've gathered, DW doesn't have ads at all. They cover the costs of running the business by selling paid accounts; they've set it up as invitation-only so that they can ensure that their resources can handle the traffic.

I think that there are some people who are going to relocate, but from my flist I get the feeling that people are there just to claim their familiar LJ names.
Jill aka Josireesanwar on May 5th, 2009 11:57 pm (UTC)
That would be cool. But I only need my LJ.
birggitt: Dreamwidth Sheepbirggitt on May 10th, 2009 10:17 pm (UTC)
Well, Dreamwidht is a new journaling site, fandom friendly, with some cool features (like an easy crossposting), a Diversity Statement that got my heart, and a lot of tools to interact with people who lives in other blogging sites. That means that, even if I totally left LJ (which I'll do at some point) I could easily keep in touch with my friends who stay here, read their journals and comment in their posts.
No adds, which, after the last LJ fiasco with homophobic adds all around people journals is a big YES! to me. So far, as is still in open beta, is only by invite, but there are quite a lot of invites going around, so is not really hard to get one. I got my account because I had an OpenID account there before they went Open beta, and I'm gonna get a Premium Paid Account, which is something I've never ever considered before.
I really, really like it.

Hmmm... I like the no ads just because I don't want any. Frankly, I could care less what it is. It would be interesting to poke around over there and just see what it is like.

Well, you could just go and wander around. If you use your OpenId from LJ, you can subscribe to comms and people, let comments with your username, and receive notifications as you'll do with a proper account.

Could do that.
