Laptop Question (Not for me)
My sister is considering putting some money into a laptop (especially with a bunch of places going out of business) and she asked me if I knew anything about brand. I know a few things about a few brands but I thought I'd ask all of you.

Laptop Brand (past or present):
Overall assessment? Good? Bad? Ugly?

I'm a fan of Macs personally. You can get some cheaper Mac laptops - not as cheap as PC's of course, but the low end ones (Macbook I think?) aren't too bad. They cost more up front but they come with MUCH more software included and last longer.

The only note about laptops ... (weird thing) don't use them on your lap because they overheat and the motherboard fries. I know, I did it. Always make sure to use them on a desk or get one of those "lap tables" that has a flat surface so the computer can vent heat properly. *useful advice*

I'll tell her.

Oooh I love that icon. Katee looks so pretty!

I know eh? It's from a cap from her appearance on Nip/Tuck. Fortunately I have a friend who ADORES Katee and caps everything she does so I never have to watch the bad stuff to see her. :)

*lol* Yeah that is always nice. I with you on not wanting to watch something dumb for someone I like. Jamie Denton and Desperate Housewives is the same for me. I want to support him (The Pretender) but can't watch it.

He emailed me once and so I'll always adore him.

Nathan Fillion is on Desperate Housewives too but I won't watch for him. :)

That is right. Forgot about that... and now he has that new show which I'm going to try and if I don't like... so sad.

Right, Castle or something? I hope it's good. I like Nathan.

Yeah Castle... I hope so too. He really deserves it.

True about Macs, I'm just cheap ;)

I have a Toshiba Satellite (Vista) and it works pretty well, and was just over 800$ (CDN) for me last year I think.

I was wondering about Toshiba's because I'd heard some bad stuff but wasn't all that sure. I guess it really probably depends a lot on how it is being used.
Alexstormsandsins on February 20th, 2009 02:21 am (UTC)
Well, it's like anything. If you don't take care of your Mac, of course you're going to start having problems. My mother has an Acer which isn't all that well reputable apparently, but she's never had any trouble.

Look, I use my Toshiba a heck of a lot more than most people with the (almost) entire Adobe suite, if not on a daily basis, then fairly frequently, and I haven't had problems to this day performance-wise. 'Course, I'm getting the more recent version of the suite (complete, this time) soon so we'll see, but I'm not all that worried at this point.

As long as you clean your drive(s) and defrag on a regular basis, as well as perform anti-virus sweeps... you should be safe with virtually any computer really. But of course do check for performance/RAM/all that jazz and compare prices.

Of course! I know all about Anti- virus and spyware stuff. I'm so will you there and I do know about the whole defrag thing though I always forget to actually do it.

I will let my sister know.

I have a Macbook and I love it. Seconding the lapdesk thing, my Macbook runs pretty hot. I did fry my first hard drive last year, but I have a 3 year protection plan that covered a replacement.

I used to use a Compaq Presario bought in 2001. It still works, but it's been inherited by my mum. My grandmother also has a Compaq, though it is much newer.

My mum has a Toshiba bought about a year before my grandma's. It's just about the least reliable thing I've ever used. It overheats and shuts off without warning within a half hour. It may have just been a faulty model, but I've steered clear of the brand since.

Compaq huh? KK

Thanks for the info...
stardust_20: Candlesstardust_20 on February 20th, 2009 01:11 am (UTC)
Good to know I'm not the only one who's fried a hard drive because of using a laptop on my lap. (who'd have figured?) :)

Unfortunately mine was already about 6 years old so into the garbage it went, along with everything I lost. *sigh* Thankfully I've learned my lesson.

I've used a Sony in the past, very good brand, but can sometimes be a tad expensive.

Currently have a Packard Bell, which isn't bad either.

Jill aka Jo: Ponder: Rononsireesanwar on February 20th, 2009 01:35 am (UTC)
I've always like the Sony brand but yeah... expensive.

Hmm... Packard Bell. I'm going to give her all the info everyone's given me and watch her meltdown.
Angelserenitysangel on February 20th, 2009 11:44 pm (UTC)
LOL Hope she finds one she likes.

So it's a laptop, and not a netbook that she wants?
The netbooks are handy to have with, but some might find them a tad too minimal, especially where typing is concerned, but some brands/models aren't that bad actually.

Hmm, I guess HP seems to have made good impressions from those I know that have lappies. Sony seems to be good too as already mentioned, but can be a bit more pricey. Then again, if she has it with her always and will depend on it a lot, it might be well worth it. As it also comes down to what she will use it for, and what the minimum reqs will be.
Jill aka Jo: Outlander: Je Suis Prestsireesanwar on February 23rd, 2009 09:15 pm (UTC)
A netbook sounds interesting but I know she wants to be able to do her writing and homework if she takes more classes.

I'll suggest the netbook but she also wants the memory because she loves ebooks and with audible she needs to have a program installed. I know nothing about netbooks so I don't know if that is possible.
Mira -Blueberry Witch / human in Elf disguise..miravisu on February 23rd, 2009 10:27 pm (UTC)
I suggest if she already hasn't considered it, that she go to an irl puter store and poke around on some netbooks and eye their specs to better decide! Heck, she could hound a staff person or two as well to ask performance questions ;) And of course, poking on some usual lappies wouldn't hurt either.. as it is a big expense, and the more research done in theory and practice, the better. Some netbook models seem to be very comfy to type on after all. And they are quite handy.

I personally have gotten smitten reading reviews for the Samsung NC10 model (there is a blue version too ;). When I gave the Acer Aspire One model a poke irl, the keyboard felt a tad too wobbly for my tastes, unless that particular one it was an overpokled netbook, hmm
Jill aka Josireesanwar on February 23rd, 2009 11:25 pm (UTC)
I suggested she go to a store and look into the computers there. That way she'll have a better idea of what she wants.

Thanks for the suggestions.
