Title: The Killing Club

Author: Michael Malone/Marcie Walsh

Pages: 276

Rating: 3.5

Why did you get this book?

I was interested in it. Sounds good.

Was the author new to you?

Kind of.

Would you read something by this author again?

Might.

Are you keeping it or passing it on?

Can’t keep it. Library book. I don’t know if I’d want to own it.

Book Description:

The authors of this elaborate thriller-spoof are an odd team: Walsh is a fictional character from the soap opera One Life to Live and Edgar-winner Malone is the ABC show's former head writer. The book has nothing to do with the TV program or its characters. Marcie herself isn't even a character. But on the actual television soap, the character Marcie will be writing a book - this book - as part of the show, and there will be eerie echoes of Marcie's plot - this plot - on the show. The book's heroine is 20-something Jamie Ferrara, a police homicide detective in the small New Jersey town of Gloria. When one of Jamie's high school buddies is killed in what looks like an accident, Jamie is reminded that during her senior year, she and the victim belonged to the Killing Club, in which members designed strategies for killing people they didn't like. When Jamie realizes that the accident victim invented his own murder scenario, she starts investigating. Walsh/Malone craft an interesting plot spiced up by the Peyton Place like antics of Gloria's residents. At one point, Jamie asks herself, "Was there anybody in Gloria... who wasn't cheating on a spouse?"

What did you think of the book?

This book was awesome. I can’t believe all that is happening. I still see Harry, Hermione and Ron as 11 year olds but they aren’t and I’m dying to read the next book. I like how this series has gone from feeling like a simple story to being so involved and darker. You have to know it will become dark because of the premise of the story. I really love this telling of the classic good vs. evil.

Maybe.

Passing it on.

What did you think of the book?

I love fairytales so I was excited about the prospect of a story being based on a fairytale being real. The only problem was the writing wasn’t very good and the story seemed all over the place while the resolution seemed to be that the evil witch just gave up.

It had its cute aspects and I did finish it so it was so bad but I can’t say I really liked the book. There was a moment when the hero, Ivan, tries to get his 9th century wife to where his shirt, which she is horrified about because it is a man’s garb. His response is to drop it on the ground and exclaim. “Oh look, cloth on the ground.” That was funny, though his wife didn’t like it.

There was a weird mix of Christianity, Judaism and magic in this book which left me wondering and the evil witch had enslaved the god Bear. So yes there was a talking bear in the book. This book was odd.

What did you think of the book?

I know I just posted for Goblet of Fire but I'd gotten behind on my reviewing...
This book was quite a bit different than the others. It didn’t seem as exciting though you constantly knew something was up. I despised Umbridge, but I think that is the point. I loved McGonagall in this book because she takes absolutely no horse pucky from Umbridge.

It was highly annoying that they kept Harry out of the loop yet again, though that does appear to be a running theme which Dumbledore explains in the end but to which I doubt changes in the next two installments of the story.

Harry did seem a bit on edge during this book and snapped at his friends quite a bit, but they seemed to understand given that he was seeing what Voldemort (yes, I dare say his name) is up too.

Probably the thing I hated the most about this book was the death of Sirius Black. I mean why! I really liked Sirius and I adored the Christmas scene where he was so happy to just be with everyone despite the fact that it started with Mr. Weasley being injured. And yes I noticed that Sirius wasn’t careful what he said to Kreacher, which I was bothered by. I mean the moment we meet Kreacher I was thinking he would end up turning on them (despite his ties to Sirius after all Dobby did). I felt so bloody awful for Harry because he felt like he could go to Sirius when he couldn’t speak to others. Harry held the hope of one day being with Sirius (in a son role) because he felt cared about by the man.

Yes, I know why Harry must stay with the Dursley’s but I just hate that he must endure them. Of course, maybe now that the Order has threatened them he’ll be treated better. Still, I’m just so mad that Sirius’ dead. I really liked Snuffles.

Well onto The Half Blood Prince!

What did you think of the book?

Well, I wasn’t as fond of the whole Tri-wizard tournament thing but I did like how much Sirius was there for Harry. I personally have this deep love for Sirius, which has everything to do with his love of Harry. I really want Harry to live with him though I know that it isn’t possible.

Who would suspect Moody? I mean why help Neville through the shock after the class if he was a baddy? I mean, of course, you want to suspect him because he is the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor but he just didn’t seem like a bad guy. I mean after he tells you there are those things that stand out but even now I can’t remember him being anything other than helpful.

You really weren’t expecting Cedric death. I mean part of you could be while the rest just didn’t expect the abruptness of it. I really felt bad for Harry in that moment. Oh and I just had to love Hermione for getting Rita Skeeter.

[info]tvaddictgurl ,though I made a few changes. Oh and I rate on a scale from 1-5... 5 being the best.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

I remember liking the movie. I remember thinking it was pretty good. I still like it but it annoys me how much they changed. Why do that to the story?

Sirius gave Harry the Firebolt at Christmas not at the end of the school year! Harry also wasn’t with Hermione when he did the saved himself and Sirius at the end. Of course, they also had to go and change who saw Peter on the map too. Why? It was unnecessary and made a lot more sense the why J.K. wrote it.

I still like the movie though not nearly as much a when I first watched it. Grrrr…

Possible Spoilers

I've actually read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone before, but it had been a really long time and now I have them all in audio form (gifted), so I decided to listen to the whole thing over.

Of course, after I listened to Sorcerer's Stone I had to keep going on to Chamber of Secrets. I knew there were a few differences from the book though overall it seemed very much the same. That I'm okay with. Oh but how Gilderoy Lockhart annoyed me!

Now that those two are down... onto Prisoner of Azkaban!

Also thanks to [info]hjsnapepm for helping with my spelling of the Harry Potter names.

Eragon

Review #: 9

Title: Eragon

Author: Christopher Paolini

Pages: 768

Scale of 1-5: 3.5

Why did you get this book?

Given to me for my birthday.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again?

Yep. Well, I do want to finish the series.

Are you keeping it or passing it on?

Keeping it for now.

What did you think of the book?

To me the writing seemed so different that at times it threw me. Once Eragon flees his home things seem to draw out. It isn’t until the character of Murtaugh shows that everything grows far more interesting.

A boy turned man, a dragon, a Shade (sorcerer who takes in spirits -evil), witches, dwarves and elves all intricate to the downfall of an evil King who was once a Dragon Rider. It seems simple enough and yet it is not.

Through out this book many questions are asked and never answered leaving your imagination to wonder. Still there is enough information to keep you interested as Eragon seeks to know why he was chosen. I can only assume all will be revealed in the next two installments of this trilogy.

I am excited to read on but wait because while Eragon left you wondering…. I hear Eldest does much worse and ends all too abruptly. I think I’ll wait until the third book is closer at hand. I would recommend this book but it may not grab everyone’s attention.

I finished Eragon! After reading it I feel compelled to praise the book and tell everyone to read it. And yet, a week ago (I don't always have time to read) when I began reading, I kept thinking it wasn't really worth my time.

The beginning of Eragon is interesting because that is when Eragon finds a strange stone which ends up hatching on him. In retrospect, I quite enjoyed being there with Eragon as his dragon went from a small lizard to a large ferocious beast. It was almost like experiencing your own pet grow from baby to adult.

The Star Trek: New Frontier Series happens to be my favorite of all the Star Trek series.

Review #: 2 for a series

Title: Star Trek: New Frontier Series

Author: Peter David

Pages: Lots

Why did you get this book?

Well being a crazed Star Trek fan (years ago) got me into the books. Once I read one written by Peter David I couldn’t really imagine reading any other Trek writer. His own personal series peeked my interest.

Was the author new to you and would you read something by this author again?

Not really. I’d read his other Star Trek books.

Are you keeping it or passing it on?

Have them all and you couldn’t pry them from my fingers.

What did you think of the book?

I loved these books mostly because of the kick ass, take no prisoners, Captain Mackenzie Calhoun. Peter David uses minor characters from the Next Generation to complete his crew making just about everything Calhoun encounters fun! Plus how many times can one Captain thwart his enemies? Apparently, it’s infinitely possible.
